Parliamentary brief

We note this welcome “Early Day Motion” (EDM) in the British Parliament:

That this House welcomes Veterans Day on 27th June; recognises with enormous gratitude the immense contribution made by veterans through the ages to the freedom enjoyed by those who live in all parts of the United Kingdom; further recognises that the courage and sacrifice of British servicemen made during the Second World War was paramount to saving victims of the Holocaust; notes that on 15th April 1945 British troops liberated the Bergen-Belsen Nazi concentration camp, rescuing tens of thousands of inmates from certain death; further notes the compassion, hope and freedom that liberators gave back to the Holocaust survivors, many of whom have prospered under the democratic values of the UK; and commends the work of organisations like the Royal Bntish Legion and the Holocaust Educational Trust who work with war veterans and Holocaust survivors, and help veterans and survivors to share their testimonies with younger generations in order to keep alive the memory of this defining episode in history.

Early Day Motions allow Members of Parliament to highlight certain issues but they are not usually debated on the floor of the House. Current signatories include Gordon Banks, James Duddridge, Bob Russell, Ian Austin, Grant Shapps, David Laws, Lee Scott, Andrew George, Peter Luff and Bob Spink. We encourage more to sign up before the end of this parliamentary session.
